Whatcom PUD recently submitted three grant applications to the State Broadband Office – to the tune of $8.1 million dollars.   In late 2022, the Washington State Broadband Office (WSBO) began accepting applications for their second round of Broadband Infrastructure grants.

These grants are to be used for construction of broadband infrastructure to bring service to areas that are unserved (under 25/3 Mbps) and underserved (under 100/20 Mbps). Applications were accepted until January 17, 2023.  Rating and ranking began on January 18, and awards are anticipated on February 28, 2023.  There is a provider challenge period from January 20 through February 10, 2023.  Eligible project costs may be incurred and reimbursed from February 2023 to October 30, 2026.  The required cash or in-kind match is 10% of the total project cost.

The PUD submitted three applications and secured commitments from three internet service providers (ISP’s) to partner on this WSBO Grant application to build fiber optic infrastructure to homes/businesses in the Point Roberts, Glacier and Ravencrest communities. See link below for map detail of proposed project areas.
