Sub-Category Ground Water Augmentation of Streams

Option Ground Water Augmentation

Definition

Site ground water wells to augment instream flows. Once the stream flows are met, ground water would be applied for other supply uses.

Location Lowlands

Benefits Fish Habitat:
  • Improve habitat.

Water Quantity:
  • Improved water quantity supply for users. Potential flood mitigation.

Water Quality:
  • Improvement to temperature and dilution to pollutants.
Instream Flows:
  • Provides immediate instream flow improvements.

Other:
  • Enforcement of water use.
Challenges Challenges identified in the database include:
  • More surface water users shifting to ground water

  • Need to address priority date issues

  • Potential non-recharge and aquifer draw down

  • Costs

  • Subsidize other users

  • Enforcement

Additional Information

Identify amount of instream water needed and when during critical stream period, identify and quantify legal users, cost estimates and feasibility, including legal and regulatory (e.g. senior water rights impacts), identify all water rights holders, identify and evaluate quality improvements pre-and post implementation, identify implementation and administration roles/responsibilities, and gather data to support the impacts.
