Option Change Surface Water Diversions to Ground Water Withdrawals (and vice versa)

Definition

The purpose of changing surface water withdrawals to ground water withdrawals (and vice versa) is to minimize impacts on surface water and groundwater sources.

Location WRIA1

Benefits Fish Habitat:
  • Changes of water source (i.e., surface to ground or vice versa) could help maintain critical flow-related fish habitat during low flow periods.

Water Quantity:
  • Changes of water source (i.e., surface to ground or vice versa) could reduce the impacts of the diversion on water supplies.

  • Changes of water source (i.e., surface to ground or vice versa) could change the time in which impacts on surface water occur. For example, a direct diversion of surface water during the low flow summer months could be changed to ground water so that the impact of the water use on the surface water is delayed until after the low flow period.

Water Quality:
  • Changes of water source (i.e., surface to ground or vice versa) could alleviate water quality problems during the low flow period by moving the impacts to a higher flow period.

Instream Flows:
  • Changes of water source (i.e., surface to ground or vice versa) could minimize impacts during the low flow period by moving them to another time when flows are higher.

Other:
  • None listed in database.
Challenges None listed in database.
