Option Flood Management

Definition

Flood management reduces damage caused by flooding through the removal of structures in the flood plain, buy-outs, development of meander corridors, retrofits, and regulations. It also improves fish habitat by introducing native vegetation; lower, setback, or removal of levees, removal of structures and fill from the flood plain.

Location WRIA 1

Benefits Fish Habitat:
  • River channel maintenance practices (e.g., introduce native vegetation; lower, setback, or remove levees, remove structures and fill from the flood plain) provide opportunities for protection and enhancement.

Water Quantity:
  • If flood waters are stored in the watershed, water could be available for new or expanded uses of water for instream and/or out-of-stream purposes.

Water Quality:
  • Flood management could reduce the exposure of flood waters to potential pollutant sources.

Instream Flows:
  • River channel maintenance practices (e.g., introduce native vegetation; lower, setback, or remove levees, remove structures and fill from the flood plain) provide opportunities for protection and enhancement.
