Option Land Use: Agricultural to Urban/Residential Conversion

Definition

The conversion of agricultural land to urban or residential uses would involve construction of housing and infrastructure for support services on lands formerly used for food production.

Location WRIA1

Benefits Fish Habitat:
  • Depending on the housing density, infrastructure (roads, utilities, industrial and/or service sector activities), and associated mitigation and storm water management activities, conversion of agricultural lands to urban or residential use could provide opportunity for fish habitat protection and enhancement through provision of temperature moderating shade, large woody debris recruitment potential, improved habitat for insects and other food sources, and elimination of a potential pollutant source.

Water Quantity:
  • Although it depends on housing density and the industrial and service sector activities that create the need for conversion in the affected area, generally more water could be provided for new or expanded uses of water for instream and/or out-of-stream purposes.

Water Quality:
  • Depending on the housing density, infrastructure (roads, utilities, industrial and/or service sector activities), and associated mitigation and storm water management activities, conversion of agricultural lands to urban or residential use could provide opportunity for water quality protection and enhancement through temperature moderation, sediment reduction, reduced pollutant loading.

Instream Flows:
  • Depending on the housing density, infrastructure, and associated mitigation, conversion of agricultural lands to urban or residential use could provide opportunity for instream flow protection and enhancement.
