Option Land Use: Agricultural to Forest Conversion

Definition

The conversion of agricultural land to forestland would involve leaving the land fallow and relying on natural regeneration from seed sources or by planting trees within agricultural areas.

Benefits Fish Habitat:
  • Replacing agricultural lands with forest lands could provide opportunity for fish habitat protection and enhancement improved habitat for insects and other food sources, and elimination of a potential pollutant source.

Water Quantity:
  • If forest lands replace agricultural lands that were formerly irrigated, more water could be provided for new or expanded uses of water for instream and/or out-of-stream purposes.

  • If forest lands replace agricultural lands that were used to cultivate crops with low water demand, less water could be provided for new or expanded uses of water for instream and/or out-of-stream purposes.

Water Quality:
  • Replacing agricultural lands with forest lands could provide opportunity for water quality protection and enhancement through temperature moderation, sediment reduction, and reduced pollutant loading.

Instream Flows:
  • Replacing agricultural lands with forest lands could provide opportunity for instream flow protection and enhancement.
