The Nooksack River flows from the high snowfields and glaciers of Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan and the Twin Sisters range in the North Cascades. Home to all five types of salmon, bald eagles, cougar, elk, black bear and many other fish and wildlife, the Nooksack also provides water as a source for municipal, industrial, irrigation, recreation and other uses. The PUD has two treatment facilities that draw water from the Nooksack River. The function of both plants is to provide primary treatment, which lowers turbidity levels before conveying the water to PUD customers. Plant One is located downstream of the City of Ferndale. The maximum intake flow is 50 cubic feet (approximately 374 gallons) per second. Plant Two is located upstream of Ferndale. The maximum intake flow is 28 cubic feet (approximately 209 gallons) per second. |
