Substation Technician I
Public Utility District No. 1 of Whatcom County is seeking a Substation Technician I to perform operations and maintenance activities required for the District’s electric substations and electric equipment associated with the District’s water treatment plants. Requires working knowledge of substations including high and medium voltage equipment, transformers and switchgear. Must have the ability to operate controllers; program automated instruments such as variable frequency drives and; install electronic relays, instruments and controls for newly installed equipment such as transformers, pumps and programmable controllers. Person in this position participates in the development of electrical specifications for projects and bid documents and performs field supervision of District electrical contractors.
Candidates must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and communicate clear and concise verbal instructions and information to coworkers, customers and the general public.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and successful completion of a Substation Technician, Wireman Apprenticeship or District-approved equivalent. A minimum of five (5) years experience on 115 kV substation operations and maintenance, practical experience in large electric motors (480 to 2400 Volt and 75 to 700 Hp) motor controls relay and control equipment, preferably with a transmission and distribution utility. Hiring Salary Range: $34.46 – $40.46 hourly (DOE) including excellent benefits.
